Secondhand Goods
A secondhand good refers to an item that has been previously owned as well as an item that is not in brand new condition. These items are durables that can be used over and over for a long period of time. Some of the benefits of buying a secondhand item, such as books, can be that it is cheaper, reduces waste, and prevents needless consumption of the earth’s resources.
Of course in some cases the fact that it is secondhand may mean that it is more valuable than when it was originally bought. This can occur with rare and collectible items (whether posters, books or movies), especially if they are antiques in good condition. Another factor is whether the previous owner was someone famous.
Secondhand Books
Secondhand books can include hand-me-down children’s books from parent to child that has significant personal value, paperbacks that aren’t at all valuable and are sold cheaply over and over, textbooks that students no longer need and so are transferred to new students, and much much more. They could be very valuable, such as first edition publications or out-of-print publications. First print publications (as used by collectors) refers to a book that was produced by the first print run that a publisher did. This is as opposed to reprinted books that are done in a variety of formats (with comments, prefaces, spelling corrections, different jacket covers, etc). Out-of-print publications refer to books that have not achieved the required annual sales to continue printing and therefore are no longer being published.
The value of a secondhand book can depend on its condition (whether all the pages are intact, any water damage, the state of the book cover), its rarity (how many copies were made originally and whether they survived), and the demand for the book. Another factor that can exponentially increase the value of the book is whether is it autographed.
