Online Bookstores
An online bookstore is a usually a shop that sells its products via a website through providing a online catalogue and shopping cart software. The catalogue can show pictures of the product and give general details such as author, publisher, year of publication, where it was published, the title of the book, whether it is a hardcover or softcover, fiction or non-fiction, number of pages, and item number. If it is a rare or used book it may also detail why it is rare, previous owners, the condition of the book, the colour and embelishments of the cover and spine, as well as the condition of the dustjacket.
An online bookstore may be a general retail bookstore providing a wide selection of books across genres. These could include fiction titles in the mystery, detective, crime, romance, fantasy, chic lit, sci-fi, westerns genres, or non-fiction titles whether biographies, reference books, self-help books and more. Some online bookstores specialise in particular genres, literature of a certain country, children’s books, languages, or rare and antique books. Other online bookstores may sell only new books, while others may sell used and secondhand books, or a combination of both.
Advantages of Online Bookstores
Online bookstores can be very useful as they can provide a wider selection of books than those available in actual bookshops. The books can be cheaper because the store has lower overheads when using the internet to sell their goods- such as staff wages, renting premises, and so on. Online competition can also drive prices down as it is easier to compare goods and prices across stores online. It is very convenient to shop at an online bookstore as it is available wherever there is internet access and there is no closing time! Furthermore, the book can be delivered to your house or office without you having to travel anywhere. This is particularly useful when seeking out-of-print and hard to find books which may not be available at traditional bookstores.
